Confirmation is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation (the others being Baptism and Holy Communion). Those who have been baptised continue on the path of Christian initiation through the sacrament of Confirmation. In this sacrament, they receive the fullness of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, just as the apostles received them at Pentecost.
“This giving of the Holy Spirit conforms believers more perfectly to Christ and strengthens them so that they may bear witness to Christ for the building up of his body in faith and love. They are so marked with the character or seal of the Lord that the Sacrament of Confirmation cannot be repeated.” (Introduction to Rite of Confirmation)
Requirements
Within the Archdiocese of Sydney, Confirmation is conferred in year 6. The candidate must be baptised and have received the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
Each candidate is to have a sponsor who is a practicing Catholic of sixteen years of age or older and who has received the Sacraments of Initiation. In order to keep the connection with Baptism, it is recommended that the godparent also be the sponsor. However this is not compulsory. Parents may not be sponsors.

The Parish Based Program at Holy Innocents’
Children from a variety of schools come together to learn and celebrate as a united Parish community. We follow the Sydney Archdiocese preparation program. Children and at least one parent must attend four group preparation sessions. In these sessions, the children, with the support of their parents, will be given thorough catechesis on the meaning of sacrament. Content is reinforced by the teachers and catechists in our schools. The children must also attend a commitment Mass, a reflection afternoon and rehearsals.
